Dr Wolverton's research startesd 25 years ago at NASA when the build-up of hazardous air pollution levels in teh Skylab spacecraft was first discovered. Houseplants proved to be by far the most promising means of maintaining a healthy indoor eco-system in space, and in any enclosed living area.
In this book, the author discusses and analyses 50 houseplants, explaining what they can do in home and office, rating each according to their effectiveness in removing various atmospheric pollutants. The Lady palm (Raphis excelsa) and Areca palm (Chrysalidocarpus lutedcens) are particularly effective. Houseplants are also the safest means of adding healthy moisture to indoor air in winter. Ficus alii and Peace lilies can add significant quantities of pure moisture to the air.
